{"id":9084,"date":"2020-04-11T12:25:25","date_gmt":"2020-04-11T17:25:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/matthewremski.com\/wordpress\/?p=9084"},"modified":"2020-04-11T12:25:25","modified_gmt":"2020-04-11T17:25:25","slug":"4-5-2020-minister-of-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/matthewremski.com\/wordpress\/4-5-2020-minister-of-children\/","title":{"rendered":"4\/5\/2020 | Minister of Children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Justin Trudeau has our attention on the CBC<br \/>\nFor the children&#8217;s question period.<br \/>\nOur boys lean in to hear what he&#8217;ll say.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m tense, waiting for the pauses and wavers.<br \/>\nI know that ministers and fathers can lie.<\/p>\n<p>The seven year-old notes Justin is handsome.<br \/>\nThe almost-four year-old is watchful on my lap.<br \/>\nMy partner stands behind our chair.<br \/>\nA brother and sister in Montreal ask:<br \/>\n&#8220;What will happen to us if our parents get sick?&#8221;<br \/>\nI can feel my partner breathe with me,<br \/>\nBut we keep our focus on the boys.<br \/>\nAt bedtime she will rock the younger one as he cries<br \/>\nAnd repeats the question.<br \/>\nIt takes more time for parents to comfort children<br \/>\nThan they have to comfort each other.<\/p>\n<p>Justin presents a navy cardigan and meticulous grooming,<br \/>\nNeatly framed on the colonial steps.<br \/>\nI bet he&#8217;s pulling on old drama teacher tricks:<br \/>\nPretend the camera lens is the face of his youngest.<br \/>\nPretend the teleprompter scrolls a Christmas story.<br \/>\nForget the actor&#8217;s terror of an empty theatre:<br \/>\nPretend the children are all there.<\/p>\n<p>He starts every answer in good form: with a sigh,<br \/>\nA smile, and &#8220;I know many of you are frightened.&#8221;<br \/>\nThen he finds the talking-point groove:<br \/>\nCanada, taking care, Canada, safe, Canada,<br \/>\nBrave nurses, Canada, working together, health,<br \/>\nGood place, good country, Canada.<br \/>\nThe country&#8217;s name can become a mantra<br \/>\nFor how its settlers want to see themselves.<\/p>\n<p>If you let the sound be ancient again,<br \/>\nYou can hear the word that meant &#8220;village&#8221;<br \/>\nIn a time before boats and planes brought<br \/>\nSmallpox, economic plans, and cardigans.<\/p>\n<p>A while back, the seven year-old asked me<br \/>\n&#8220;Is Justin Trudeau a good man?&#8221;<br \/>\nBy instinct, my reply was more about myself:<br \/>\n&#8220;Like all of us, he&#8217;s trying to be a good person.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>(That feeling when teaching the benefit of the doubt<br \/>\nPerpetuates a spell about white intentions.)<\/p>\n<p>The young interviewer, online from his bedroom,<br \/>\nSays they received 4000 questions.<br \/>\nThe selections show that children ask<br \/>\nWhat many adults ask, stripped of number-crunching.<br \/>\nA snowsuited boy in Iqaluit asks<br \/>\nWhether the virus can survive the cold.<br \/>\nA six year-old girl in Toronto asks<br \/>\nHow homeless people are supposed to stay at home.<br \/>\nThere is no question from a First Nations child about how<br \/>\nTo wash your hands without clean water.<\/p>\n<p>I know the parent politics of cutting a deal<br \/>\nBetween what I know, what I am ashamed of,<br \/>\nAnd what I can say to project a safe world.<br \/>\nI know the pivot between dread<br \/>\nAnd the reframe that mixes hope with fiction.<br \/>\nDoes acting the part of the good parent scale up?<br \/>\nThe Minister of Children also has to comfort oil barons.<br \/>\nHe has to pretend he knows what millennials need,<br \/>\nPromise that we can do anything when we grow up,<br \/>\nThat everything we want is sustainable,<br \/>\nThat everything will turn out alright.<br \/>\nHe shares tobacco with chiefs and then betrays them.<br \/>\nHe has to smile as he zooms with sociopaths.<br \/>\nHe has to count the money that pays for the stagecraft<br \/>\nThat prompts a boy to ask: &#8220;Is he a good man?&#8221;<br \/>\nInstead of &#8220;Does he do good things?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Justin is a month younger than me.<br \/>\nHe and I might share night sweats,<br \/>\nPalpitations, a certain emptiness about who we are.<br \/>\nHe and I might have bonded<br \/>\nIn a high school drama class in the late 1980s,<br \/>\nWhen climate collapse and trickster stories<br \/>\nWere fantasies to star in<br \/>\nRather than medicine to surrender to<br \/>\nWhen we manage to tell our children: &#8220;We don&#8217;t know.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 mr<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Justin Trudeau has our attention on the CBC For the children&#8217;s question period.
